05-07-08 From a Mandalay Bay Grave Yard Dealer

I work at the Mandalay Bay as a dealer and I just can't understand why the dealers could even be reluctant to having better benefits and job
security.  And speaking about Security they (security guards) also are taking steps to protect what is theirs, by joining the firefighter's and policeman's association. Now what does that tell you? They don't even have toke issues or half of the issues we have but they are smart enough to see their bleak future if they don't do anything about it now.  So dealers what is it that you need to realize that our present and future is at jeopardy. Sign the card now and when we do go to a vote you will have the option to say Yes or No. I've signed mine.

I'm confident that the majority of dealers are slowly coming around to the idea of uniting and bargaining for better pay and benefits. It's just taking a bit longer than we originally anticipated. But while we were busy with our union efforts, the security department got wise and decided to join their own union. I hope Mandalay dealers will see this as the kick start they need to get those A-cards in, like you. Thanks again for writing in.

All I want to say is that we too are trying to unionize and you  guys  need to jump on the U-Train. Steve Wynn is trying his hardest with  all  his money and big lawyers and god only knows who else is in his  pocket to get this bill approved. Shame on him a (so called) man of his  caliber doing something so horrendous by paying his other employees which is really his responsibility, with someone else's tips. So what's next  are we to pay for those employee's benefits too? Hey why not he  is apparently getting away with this. Once the bill passes it will be  to late for those that are not under the protection of the TWU union.  So Dealers wake up! Smell the Roses because Wynn is smelling the  money. Send in your Cards filled out and signed today! You've got nothing to lose except your own money!

The MGM properties are always looking for ways to save money too, not just Steve Wynn. Dealers at Mandalay Bay are not safe from having tips shared just because Terry Lanni wrote a letter, we need to be under the protection of a union contract!!!

WE NEED A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING VOICE, NOW IS THE TIME TO UNITE !!!!

05-05-08 From a Mandalay Bay Swing Shift Dealer

Hi I am a swing shift dealer at the Mandalay Bay. I have been there from Day one. I have been in this business for over 30 years and I have seen many, many changes and experienced many things. But this one takes the cake. I have been trying to get this website address for a long time and have not been able to,  I really did not know who to ask or trust. And now come to find out, that there are dealers on Swing that are trying to make it impossible for us to reach you guys. There is several dealers that are throwing away any cards or papers you leave out for us so let me warn you, this is a heads up. There are so many dealers on Swing that are not even aware that we have our own site.  I don't understand why these few selfish dealers are doing this. We are in a country where we have the privilege to be able to make up our own minds. This act that they are committing is a communistic act. I wonder if management is behind what these wrong dealers that are doing this. To those dealers that are doing this Leave us alone we can decide for ourselves if we want a union or not this is AMERICA!, And to you guys please do not give up on putting out the cards there are dealers that are very much interested in unionizing. So Thank You for this website and I will sign a card and send it in.

Thanks for the info, but we're aware of these few cowardly dealers. Why are they killing themselves trying to obstruct this union drive? Who knows. Ignorance would be my first guess. They may feel that not knowing the facts and living in denial makes them feel more comfortable about their future. I know it sounds ridiculous but there are those who don't want to be informed and feel that if others are enlightened, that it might somehow "kill their buzz".

In any event, thank you for taking the time to write in and please let others know about this site. The more people logging on, the more Confidential Cards the TWU has been receiving.

What is it with all these dealers wanting to wait and see what happens with the Wynn and Caesars dealers? Don't they get it? Now is the only
time we have to secure our tokes from being re-distributed. The Nevada Supreme Court has just heard the Wynn dealers case and will soon rule. With half of these justices in Steve Wynn's pocket, it doesn't take a genius to figure out which way they'll rule. So guys get with it and
send in those cards because if you sit back and wait and see, it's going to be too late to secure our tokes.

Well said. "Status Quo" can only be locked in once the DEALERS UNION is voted in and certified. "Waiting and Seeing" is exactly what  Terry Lanni and his boys are hoping for. For Terry knows that when his friend Steve wins his case, all bets are off! And that all is needed is a ten day notice to all MGM-Mirage dealers that tip confiscation will be implemented at that time. And guess what folks, it will all be legal. That's all they've been waiting for; the issue of legality. And the money they could save or generate for the company is upwards of $50,000,000. per year! WOW! Of course, it will cost each dealer at Mandalay Bay $12,000. to $15,000. a year. Oh well, someone has to bite the bullet, right?
So "Waiting and Seeing" would be quite profitable for MGM-Mirage but costly for us dealers. The decision is ours; the TWU authorization cards are waiting to be printed out sent in. WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?

I haven't had anybody knock on my door to sign the teacher petition to get the casinos to contribute to our children's education. How do I get my name on the petition?

Well just hang in there, as it takes time to get to everyone. Also I understand that some petitioners are going to be stationed at certain shopping centers during peak times.

So am I to understand that Mr. Lanni has shot himself in the foot once again for forcing his opinions upon us. Oh well, keep up the good work Terry. We love it when you tell us how to think, and what and what not to sign. We're too stupid to think for ourselves, so thanks again!

04-27-08  From Mandalay Bay Fulltime Dayshift Dealer

I have a real issue here that I wonder if we do become a union as dealers, can the TWU help us with this? I am a smoker and disabled an I feel like I am a criminal because of it.  When we were hired this was not an issue nor a condition, and now they indirectly want us all to quit. I recognize the law and it states that there should be no smoking where there is food service.  The Mandalay Bay has an abundance of space which I am sure has a place where we would be sheltered from the elements of nature and not be shunned upon.  I have to hide when I am on a break because the places that were assigned are so far away that with the given time on our breaks to get to and fro, it is almost impossible to sit eat ,go to the bathroom, wash your hands and enjoy your one and only vise for some of us. These places must have been chosen by a non-smoker with no disability, they have made it almost impossible for us as (dealers) to walk to these few chosen area in the very limited amount of time given to us.  So being disabled it is even worse!  One of the places they chose is on the sixth floor, sure there are benches there to sit ,but there is no covering from the element of nature the benches get so hot (and mind you it is not full summer yet) that I burned my leg, it was red and blistered.  I did not realize how hot it really was till I got home and there are bees everywhere. But do you think I am going to tell Management? Heck no, Why? 1st they really don't care and 2nd they'll frown on me because I smoke, and then probably send me for a drug test!  Which is no problem for me other than being humiliated again. All the other places assigned are even further away. MGM/Mirage has taken this law to the letter, but not because they are so righteous, but because one individual whom has the all the power hates smokers, He has made this clear to us. We tried to talk to him as to consider at least the handicap employees and his response was "it's not happening" And that came from Mr. B.H. himself.  So if he does not consider the Handicap forget about the rest of us. Can the TWU help in making this a part of our contract?  If so Then I surely want to unionize because this is only one of many issues that need attention!

Thank You, for sharing this issue with us as every issue is as important as the other. The "TWU Local721 Dealers Union" will try to provide solutions to each and every one of our issues at hand.  Right now there is one person making all these rules, and not necessarily taking into consideration just how important these issues are to each and every one of us. It seems to be "his way or the highway" there is only take and no give. Instead  of making us feel wanted there to provide our best as we all do as front line workers that we are, all they insinuate is "you are so lucky to have this job" Well it certainly doesn't feel like that anymore does it? As far as being disabled they really wish we weren't there, it would cost them a lot less as far as insurance is concerned, so they try their best to alienate us and discourage us for not conforming to there rules which change daily and they hope we will just quit. So dealer please try to hang in there hopefully we will get this vote in and persevere. The only way to do this is to Fill out Print and Sign your Confidential TWU Card (form) and mail it in Now! This way we can vote the Union In!!!!!

I am a fulltime dealer and I want to vent this issue with you. Several dealers have had grievances with management, and management have told that dealer that Human Resources is closed when they ask for someone from that department to be present at that time, because we have no one else to help us listen to our side. Then I find out that their is someone there 24 hrs a day.  Maybe it was that time of day close to going home,  and they did not want to spend any more time on this. So we are inconveniencing them and we are literally forced to sign a warning slip or verbal, which ever it may be. And when I asked to see what they wrote on their report, I was denied, that it was not an option. How fair is that?  I believe that if we had a union steward present we may have a better chance to a fair hearing.  Bottom line, Human Resources is paid by MGM/Mirage. So dealers what are you waiting for? Sign those cards now and mail them in!

Thank you for this valuable information. We have never been aware of the fact that there is a representative available to us after office hours. That gives Management the advantage of starting a Negative paper trail on a dealer if they choose to. I think that maybe they are afraid that such representative just might sway our way (Fat Chance) and that may be one of the reasons that we were not told that a human resource rep is available 24 hrs. That is one of the advantages we would have with a union, Their would a Shop Steward that would listen to our side and in our defense represent us to make sure everything is done fairly. So Dealers Which would you prefer, a person from Human Resources that is on MGM/Mirage payroll or a Shop Steward that is a union representative that is working solely for the dealer's best interest?

Hi, I am a full time dealer on dayshift at the Mandalay Bay, and I need to say this even though I know it has been one of the subjects address earlier. I can remember when our management in (at least more than one of our pre-shift meetings) told us that for those who choose not to fill out the "online Wellness Assessment Survey"  they would raise their premiums as well as co-pay and deductibles. Then towards the end of the surveys time they announce that they were not going to raise our premiums, co-pay or deductible (again in another pre-shift meeting) Well guess what, it went up anyway.  So what kind of word (trust worthy) does MGM/Mirage have, they change things at their own whim. A lot of the dealers may be in great shape at this time so they don't realize that time passes and we all get older and that is when they are going to wish they had listen to the urgency to having a union to protect us. How can these dealers not see this? MGM/Mirage can also change their minds about our toke sharing issue, all they are waiting for is for the bill to pass. The dealers need to send in their cards so we can bring the union to a vote.

Yes, I appreciate you bringing this subject up and Thank You!. Management did exactly that. And  we trusted in their word and they outright lied to us. And that is exactly what they will do if Steve Wynn gets his bill through.  They will change their minds and follow suit and do as Steve has done to his dealers. And any dealer that does not see that is asleep or living in LaLa land.  They remind me of the Ostrich that hides his head in the ground and thinks it has all gone away.  WAKE UP DEALERS, STOP WAITING TILL IT'S TO LATE!!!!

04-17-08 From  a Mandalay Bay Day Shift Dealer

I am a Mandalay Bay Dealer and have been there for 8 years. I have a question, I was told by a floor supervisor that once we become union, if I wanted to get an extra day off I can't just go to the pencil as we have been. I would have to go to the Shop Steward and get his or her "OK" first, is that true? They said extra days we can forget about it! I worry, what if I have an urgent appt or something of such?

Thanks for taking the time to write in. In a word, NO!  Requesting an extra day off, has nothing to do with our shop stewards; they simply won't be getting involved unless of course their is some kind of favoritism going on. Example: Let's say you have requested a certain day off for what you believe is a valid reason. You are refused, but Joe Blow then asks for that same day off and gets it. This situation would at least merit an investigation and a steward should be called in.
But as far as requesting time off, nothing will change. Unfortunately some of our floor supervisors have been told by their higher ups to start spreading these lies to scare off union support. We're not surprised and neither should you be, as this is a good example of how most Union Busters operate.  Union Busters prefer to stay behind the scenes, while educating their minions (in this case floor supervisors) on how to casually propagate lies and intimidation for the purpose of instilling fear among the employees (in this case dealers). Please don't fall for these sorry attempts to stonewall our union drive. We're ALL smarter than that.  Meanwhile, keep those cards coming in, so we can all join the TWU "Las Vegas Dealers Local 721, and negotiate a fair and equitable contract for our dealers.

Shush, Dealer's do not be afraid send in the card. Without it we can never have a vote like Caesars and the Wynn did. We deserve the right to vote.   If we should win a Union Vote we can negotiate till the cows come home and corporate can do nothing to us or our benefits.  If we are organizing we would be in a much better position then we are now, we will not know till we try. The situation can only get better we have nothing to lose so send in your flipping cards (forms if printed from your computer) and if you know of a dealer who does not know anything about being union take a minute to direct them to this site, the www.twulocal721.org site which is the TWU site, The www.twumiragedealers.org site, The www.twuparisdealers.org site, The Golden Nugget www.gndealers.org  site. their is valuable information.  All we need to do is inform them where to go to get it.

This message says a lot.  If you sit back and do nothing you will receive nothing or maybe get handed more financial woes in the way of less benefits, less job security. We are in a recession and the front line employees of corporations are the ones who will be hit the hardest with layoffs and loss of benefits.  during tough times and always, you need the protection of a contract with your employer, this will insure things are handled fairly.  In reply to feedback #78... first of all, it is illegal for the management to make such threats... second of all, the cards are confidential, not because  I say, but because that is the law... you might want to inform this to your Asian friends. There is no way the bosses will know if they send in a card or not send in a card... (although they wish they could know) that is fact! please try to relay to your Asian friends this message.. I don't know how it is in foreign countries, but this is AMERICA and this is how it works. It's quite simple! Good Luck!

Thank you for your response. I for one am completely amazed at the lengths that middle and lower management will stoop to try and thwart this union drive. Since they can't take us on in say, debating the merits of joining the Dealers Union, they feel their only recourse is to spread fear through lies and empty threats. Pretty pathetic really, especially when you consider that the  "TWU Las Vegas Dealers Local 721" not only will benefit the dealers, but will eventually help lower management as well. So to our American dealers, our Latino American dealers, and our Asian American dealers; ALL AMERICANS HAVE FREEDOM OF CHOICE!  Always feel free to exercise yours, and never be intimidated by others. If you feel uncomfortable because of threats made by management, please fill out an "INCIDENT REPORT" and forward it to the TWU. These people are breaking the law, and it will not be tolerated. Meanwhile please send in your CONFIDENTIAL AUTHORIZATION CARD right away so we can ALL have the right to CHOOSE!

I keep hearing that the dealers at the Mandalay Bay want to unite within the TWU organization. What I and I feel a lot of other dealers don't understand is, why it has not come to a vote yet? Why do we have to fill out those authorization cards, what do they have to do with a vote for a union? If we just hold a vote won't that let the National Labor Relations Board know we want to unite, Won't that be enough? Can there be a freak accident ,where management could get a hold of those cards and get all our names? Because that is what the dealers are afraid of. So can we be assured that this would never happen?

Thank you for your questions, as this is essentially why we offer this feedback forum. Under federal law, the NLRB will only allow a union vote to take place once the local chapter (in this case, the TWU Local 721) requests it, with a minimum of 51% interest from the employees in that group. This interest would be in the form of authorization cards. Keep in mind; sending in an A-card only informs the TWU of your preference to HAVE a vote, not on how you WISH to vote. Although only 51% interest is required by the NLRB, the TWU won't request a union vote unless they receive at least 70% interest. They feel 70% is a safer margin for success.

As for the confidentiality of the authorization cards; rest assured that only the TWU has access to them once they're sent in. Management can never get a hold of these cards, nor can they legally ask any dealer if they have signed one. If they ever do, kindly remind them that they are breaking the law by asking, or if you don't want to raise any red flags, pretend you don't know what they're talking about. Then send in an INCIDENT REPORT.
As for their being a freak accident, where management could get a hold of these Authorization cards...WOW! I guess the building that houses the TWU offices could blow up via a terrorist attack, and the wall safe containing these authorization cards, hurls through the air south by southwest across town until it crashes through the second floor of Mandalay Bay and lands on Mr. Hornbuckle's desk and breaks open. GOSH, I hope that doesn't happen! But short of that, I think we're pretty safe.

I am a dealer at the Mandalay Bay and have been dealing for 27 years. Why can't we leave everything as it is at Mandalay Bay. I  don't   know   much about this ,but it seems to be much easier to just leave it alone. I'm afraid of getting laid off. I need my job so this just has me confused.   What should I do, I need my benefits and I do not want my tokes or any part of them to be taken from me.   Why can't it be the way it use to be, easy? Will they know if I send in a Card?

Thanks for writing in. Last question first: No, management will never know if you sent in a card unless YOU inform them. Otherwise, it's completely confidential.
You obviously have a lot of concerns about your future as a dealer. And you should. Thanks to Steve Wynn and corporate bean counters, this industry is rapidly changing, and not for the benefit of it's non-union workers. And we dealers are right in the thick of it.

You ask why we can't just leave everything as it is at Mandalay Bay...that it would be easier to do nothing. Well yes, initially it would be easier to do nothing and HOPE that our benefits don't continue to decrease as our premiums increase. We can do nothing and just HOPE that "Tip Confiscation" is just a horrible horrible dream...that even when the Wynn dealers lose their appeal in the Nevada Supreme Court, that every major resort on the strip won't jump to implement this new LEGAL policy as it pertains to sharing our tips with others. So yes it would be easier to sit back and watch our $80,000.00 a year job, turn into a $65,000.00 a year job.You also mentioned that you're afraid of being laid off or fired. Again, you should be afraid, very afraid. We are all "At Will" employees. This essentially means that we are at their will. As we have seen in the past, we can be terminated for any reason at any time. Paper trails are an easy way to start the process. Only union employees have the benefit of "Due Process" through representation.
Hoping these problems will just disappear isn't realistic. The only way of correcting what upper management has caused, is by taking on a proactive approach. Unionization is our only defense. Please send in your card today.

I am an Asian dealer and I have been at Mandalay Bay since we opened. I sent in my card over 2 months ago, but I am surprised to find that many other Asian dealers don't even know about this union. Some others do, but are afraid to sign cards because if they do, they think if the bosses find out, they could get fired. One boss even said that if they send in a card, they would get deported. I know they can't really do this, but I don't know how to explain it to others.

These feedbacks are the most convenient way to voice our concerns pertaining to our union drive. I especially want to thank you for taking the courage and time to write in. I only wish MORE dealers would do the same. The key here is education. As to educating others about the "Las Vegas Dealers Local 721", turning them onto this website is probably the easiest way to get the word out.  If however, they don't have access to the internet, then verbally explaining the benefits of voting to unionize is your only choice.  Benefits such as: reasonable pay scale raises, cost effective or free health insurance, PTO/flex time incentives, protection from toke sharing, shop steward representation, and job security should all be mentioned. It is also important to note that all authorization cards that are sent in, are and will continue to be completely confidential. Management has NO WAY of knowing which dealers have sent in a card. And they know it is illegal to ask any dealer if they sent in a card or how they plan to vote.
Unfortunately, there are certain management members (mostly floorsupervisors), that have convinced themselves that halting our union efforts is somehow to their advantage. Nothing of course, could be further from the truth. There have been reports that certain Asian and Latino dealers have been singled out with threats of lay-offs and/or deportation if they were to send in authorization cards and/or vote YES for the union. These empty threats are management's best ploy for instilling fear and intimidation onto whomever they feel are the least educated. Fortunately for all of us, they are wrong!
But it is up to all of us to spread the word of this website and to inform others of the benefits of unionizing. This is the only way to protect what we already have from diminishing, and build our benefits from there. So please continue to educate each other and THANK YOU again for your feedback!

I really like your website but I'm not sure I understand the meaning of the term "status quo"? Aren't we already in a state of "status quo"?

Yes and No. We are presently in a state of "Status Quo", but only until upper management decides to make a policy change. This will then change to a new state of "Status Quo". The Webster's Dictionary defines "Status Quo" as "The condition or state in which a person or thing is or has been". So in essence "locking in the Status Quo" is what we are out to achieve through a contract. Until then, upper management can and will at their whim, change any policy they feel will cut costs or promote revenue for themselves or MGM-Mirage's stock price. At any time, they can cut vacation time or health insurance benefits, as we have seen them do in the past. Although they may do this gradually in hopes that we dealers are too dumb to notice. The only way to put a stop to this is through "locking in the present Status Quo". The only way to "lock in the Status Quo" is by voting in the "Las Vegas Dealers Local 721" union. The only way of holding this vote is by the TWU receiving enough Authorization Cards from our Mandalay Bay dealers. So please send in your cards as fast as possible so we can put a freeze to our rapidly declining benefits while we negotiate.

I'm an extra-board dealer, and even though I'm very happy with the nice raise we all just got, I'm just not sure what else the union can do for us. Can you explain what other benefits the union can get us?

You can and will enjoy an infinite array of improved benefits at your disposal. Starting with having representation present before management questions you, based on any alleged infringements or complaints. This representation will be in the form of SHOP STEWARDS, and ALL dealers at Mandalay Bay will have access to their council. Being terminated/fired without cause will cease, as our "AT WILL STATUS" will soon be a thing of the past. Also Toke Protection and Toke Benefits (such as vacation, jury, sick, and hospital tokes) will also be under the control of ALL dealers, not just the full timers, because we ALL are affected and ALL contribute to our toke pool. And as for the recent raise we all received; we can do a lot better than that. For the skilled services that we dealers provide, $7.75 per hour doesn't even come close to what we truly deserve. $12.00 to $15.00 per hour is much closer to what a dealer at MB should start out at. And as for the 9 to 25 year veterans, don't even get me started!
But in answer to your question, the "LAS VEGAS DEALERS LOCAL 721" union will benefit ALL Mandalay Bay dealers, because we dealers ARE the union. That means WE dealers (extra-board included) vote for ALL aspects of what goes in our contract. So if you want a voice in your future here at MB; GET YOUR CONFIDENTIAL AUTHORIZATION CARDS IN TODAY!!! Only then can we have some of the same benefits as our other fellow workers (that have unionized) are enjoying!

I would like to be part of the union of the Dealers at Mandalay Bay. But I fear that the supervisors at Mandalay Bay may find out who the dealers are that are participating and therefore would dismiss me. Can they do that? I want to protect my tokes and my benefits and most importantly my Future. I have worked many years with this company and worked hard, and I have been content with my job. But now I feel that it is wrong the way they are showing their appreciation to me!  I believe that a Union would be the best move we can make, to protect our future. I will send my card in today!

Thank you for your confidence and your comment, for everything here is confidencial. I understand that you have worked loyally many years with this company. And you are right, the way we are treated is not fair to us. Now these companies have converted into Corporations and they don't care about us. They only look at their profits and loses.  Thank you for sending in your card because we need the dealers of MGM/Mirage to realize what's really going on and hopefully they also will Fill out, Sign and mail in their Confidential cards Today as well, so then we can have a vote which will be to our advantage and protection.

I would like to reply to the "reply" made to post #70:
Yes, when you are being herded into meetings and are being told by the union busters (through managements mouth) that the TWU is "not a good fit", by all means, speak up! DO ask them, "What Union would you recommend?" I can tell you right now, they will recommend NO UNION. But please, in front of EVERY dealer present, ASK THE QUESTION!
When in your meetings, do not sit back and be led around the room. Ask EVERY tough question you can. See what kind of answers you get. Most all will be replied with the standard response, "We will have to check on that and get back to you". Why? Because they either can not provide you with a sufficient answer, or they must "consult" with someone who they are paying far more than than the dealers for the "politically correct" answer.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take what they say as being "gospel" and NEVER let them off the hook or back down from your questions.
Remember, they want to "keep you in your place". You all know the "place", it's where dealers have been for decades.

Thank you for your points on how these mandatory dealer meetings SHOULD go.  We at Mandalay Bay have only had the pleasure of attending one of these little "get togethers", but without the benefit of any interaction. Although it was upbeat and positive, none of our real issues were addressed, simply because there was no question and answer period. It was made clear to us that if we had any questions they can be addressed after the meeting.  And we all Know that all they want to do is single out the dealers that they can perceive to be "trouble"  Perhaps at our next "captive audience meeting", management would welcome our questions and comments...NOT!   But even so, we can ask them anyway, over and over again at a meeting.   And just maybe the rest of the dealers that are asleep will awaken!!!

WHAT KIND OF BENEFITS ARE THE TWU OFFERING TO THE DEALER'S?  I DO NOT WANT TO BE UNDER INSURED.
I think the question you mean to ask is "What improved Medical Benefits can the TWU help our negotiating committee bargain for our dealers?" The answer is that it's up to our dealers to decide just what we can live with. Do we feel we're satisfied with the PPO 80-20 Plan that we're currently stuck with?  Or would we rather go back to the CPO Plan we enjoyed 2 years ago, when we paid a $10.00 co-pay for each doctor visit, but without the 20% charge for each office visit. We might also consider "FREE" medical insurance (similar to what the Culinary Union enjoys), where we dealers pay nothing, while MGM-Mirage pays the entire tab, minus what the insurance picks up (my personal favorite). So in answer to your question; it's not the TWU who will offer benefits to us dealers, it's us dealers who will bargain with upper management, in good faith, for our own benefits. But this can only happen if we get serious and vote to join the "Las Vegas Dealers Local 721" NOW! And this can only happen, if we get serious and send in those TWU authorization cards to request that vote. So if your ready for some decent benefits, not to mention a reasonable pay raise, and toke security, then you know what to do. But do it NOW, we're running out of time!

              03-20-08 From your Webmaster:

Turning the dice, spinning the ball, shuffling and pitching cards, calling hands, drop cutting, mucking and pushing cheques... So what truly is a dealer?  Once we get through the mechanics of learning to deal, we soon find that our profession requires a certain degree of finesse when dealing with our patrons.  Being on the front line, we welcome each new player with a smile and a warm greeting. As we change up their money, we may strike up a conversation by complimenting them, or asking them where they are from. With each winning hand we cheer them on, as with each loser we sympathize.  We'll joke with them while keeping the game pace at a reasonable speed. We dealers are essentially Mandalay Bay's entertainers.  On the flipside, we must also tolerate their abusive behavior when they lose or drink excessively.  Sometimes our floor supervisors will back us up; as other times they're nowhere to be found. But that's the price we pay for being on the front line.
Now for all this and quite a bit more, Mandalay Bay's upper management has decided that we dealers deserve less than $8.00 per hour. So forget about the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues we essentially produce each year by way of our social and dealing skills; we deserve less than $8.00 per hour?!!  If you agree with that assessment, do nothing.  If however, you believe that we dealers should earn a wage similar to that of say, a bartender (and who wouldn't at over $16.00 per hour), then let your feelings be heard by printing out, signing and sending in a confidential TWU authorization card today. Then we can request a vote to be held for Mandalay Bay Dealers to join the " Las Vegas Dealers Local 721"!  It's the only way we can negotiate a fair wage, rather than accept what upper management says we deserve.

I am a Full time Mirage dealer . I wish our dealers would read what comment #65 Wynn dealers. Our dealers think it won't happen to us.  They
are delusional. I hope we get 70% so we can vote.  I am praying.

The MGM/Mirage has offered us nothing, the raise was a joke, the quiet room and new EDR if ever built will not help pay your bills.  We need a union contract, the TWU is real and they are here now, when we need them. Time is on the MGM/Mirage's  side. The longer we wait it gives them more time to dilute your benefits, and maybe even take your tokes. For whatever reasons other unions did not want to get involved, now is not the time to contemplate "why" now is the time to unite, and fight for your rights. Sign a card now and stand up for yourself, This way we can go to a vote.  It is your Future!

In response to #69, it was not fellow dealers who told you that TWU was not good for you.  It was the CM and floor who said that TWU is not good for you.  A Union Buster like Mark Garitty (who has recently been hired by MGM-Mirage) told them to say this.  Your supervisors should not give a crap about who you have selected to represent you.  BTW, "not a good fit?"  Who is a better fit?  Who has more experience with dealers in Las Vegas?  Get out your yellow pages and call around.  Every Union who knows anything will tell you to call TWU!

Your right; why would management care which Union would be best for us dealers? Perhaps we should ask them which Union they would recommend for our welfare, which only now they seem to be so concerned about. Not that it would matter now, but we are curious.

Okay, I like the idea of all dealers throughout this state joining a union, my only question is why the TWU? I don't really have anything against the TWU, but as our casino manager and certain floorpeople have pointed out, this particular union would not be a good fit for the dealers of this state, simply because they have little or no experience in the gaming industry. So my question is this; why not the teamsters, or the culinary, or some other more well known union?

Thank you for your questions as you bring up some good points. It is our understanding that initially the Wynn Dealers approached the Culinary for representation, but their response was that they knew little of dealer's issues and therefore weren't interested. Next the dealers asked the Teamsters if they would be interested in representing them, and their response was quite positive until at the last minute they backed out. When asked why the sudden change of heart, they responded "We know nothing of dealer's issues." (sounds amazingly familiar doesn't it?) Next the Wynn Dealers approached the UAW, due to the fact they were in the process (and still are), of uniting most of the dealers in Atlantic City. Unfortunately, they also declined due to fact that they didn't have the time or the confidence that Las Vegas Dealers were truly ready to organize.
Then the Wynn Dealers chose to speak with representatives from the Transport Workers Union (TWU). They accepted and the Wynn Dealers accepted them for several reasons:

1. The TWU has an unblemished record of being one of 4 national unions never to have been served a federal indictment. (The Culinary and Teamsters could never have said that).
2.The TWU has 70 years experience of uniting workers and negotiating contracts.
3. The TWU is the only union that could and will offer the Dealers of Nevada total autonomy in their organizing efforts. In other words, it's the dealers not the TWU, who will vote on their contracts, for their shop stewards, for their negotiating committee, and for or against ever going out on strike.
4. And most importantly, the TWU is the only union that has the balls not to be intimidated by the clout and power of Steve Wynn and all the other casino moguls backing him.
So for these reasons and several others, we at Mandalay Bay have decided that the TWU is the perfect fit for us. If you were to take the average years of experience each dealer has, and multiplied it times the total number of dealers that will eventually join the" Las Vegas Dealers Local 721", that would give you the total number of years experience that the TWU has in the gaming industry. Remember, it's the Dealers that are the union, and will run this local chapter of the TWU. So with the TWU's 70 years of negotiating experience, coupled with the dealers infinite years of gaming experience, the "Las Vegas Dealers Local 721" will be a force to be reckoned with!

I guess Caesars Palace is the only casino that has secured their tokes, probably because we want to wait and see! I urge you guys to get those cards in, you have less than a month before the supreme court hearing and if what the Wynn dealers had to say is true, if you wait, you might lose what you have! I sent in my card.

Thank you for your feedback, support and card.  Yes, the Caesars Palace Dealers did secure their tokes and benefits, by voting in the union.    It placed them in a "Status Quo" where nothing else will change, until they bargain as a collective voice. The dealers will have the TWU representatives to act as their (spokesman) at the bargaining table.  But not before the dealers get together and agree on what exactly it is that they want and need.  I would love for our dealers at the Mandalay Bay to write down just 10 things that come to their minds that could possibly improve their job, benefits and work environment (and that's how you begin) Once the Union is Voted IN!  Dealers you have to wake up!  Because their is nothing worse than regrets and not being able do anything about it. You will not be able to turn time back! Saying: oh, I wish I had, won't do it!   It will just be to LATE!!!   WE NEED TO BE IN "STATUS QUO", to protect what we already have and even improve it, don't you think we deserve it!!!

It is Time to do something together. This people (management) does not recognize the years of dedication that we put on this job. It's sad for me to see a person that have been working for more than twenty years and makes less than $10.00 an hour. Where is the reward for been a loyal and a good employee. We need Justice Because this companies are making a lot of money thanks to us.

It is indeed sad that MGM/Mirage doesn't recognize true loyalty from it's veteran dealers. When management treats it's new hires with more respect than it's twenty year employees, something is most assuredly wrong. Why veteran dealers don't earn at least $5.00 an hour more than newer hires is beyond comprehension. Now is most definitely the time for dealers to unite!

Your green card and your right to organize, meaning join a union are protected by federal law. It is your right in America to have a vote and bring in the union. You can print a Confidential Authorization card on this website and send it in with complete anonymity.

Hey guys guess what! Here at Wynn we dealers are not aloud to collect the toke boxes at the end of the night, like you do!  Why? Because we don't need a nasty old toke committee to pay, like you do!  Uncle Steve took care of that for us, so we don't have to be (nor are we aloud ) in the room where tokes are being cut! What a relief!!  Having a toke committee is such a hassle, I feel for you guys!  We don't even have to worry about who gets cut into the toke pool, like you guys!  Our tokes are being cut by people who don't even get a share of them (supposedly), like you guys!  UNCLE STEVE REALLY TAKES CARE OF US!  Don't you guys want an UNCLE STEVE TOO!! Well just sit around and "wait and see" and soon you too will have what we have, an UNCLE to split the tokes which ever way he wants.  Won't that be fun!! Hey maybe you guys could include the Porters, the Security guards and the Pit clerks in your toke pool. We wouldn't want anybody to feel left out, would we?

It's always a treat hearing from our friends at the Wynn.  All sarcasm aside, what you have stated is essentially correct. Soon toke sharing will be implemented at most, if not all Hotel Casinos in this state. Waiting around is certainly not the answer. This only gives upper management the opportunity to seize our tokes the second the Nevada Supreme Court rules in favor of Steve Wynn, and make no mistake "The Devil" will prevail!
